Curriculum

Orchestral Strings

Ages 5-7: Suzuki

I teach young violin, viola, and cello students via the Suzuki method. This approach focuses on learning music by ear rather than learning to read music right away. This allows young students to focus on having good posture and producing a good sound before introducing notation. These books can be found in most local music stores and online. Ages 8+: Essential Elements

For ages eight and up (including adults), I use a mix of Essential Elements and other various repertoire chosen for each individual student. Using a book series such as Essential Elements allows us to learn concepts in an order that makes sense while being mindful of good posture and technique. As a student progresses, we can mix in larger repertoire, like Suzuki pieces or concertinos. For older/more advanced students, technique will be learned through larger works like etudes, concertinos, and concertos. (Click the books to find Essential Elements on Amazon.)

Ukulele (7+) and Guitar (9+)

For ukulele and guitar, I teach a more pop-like chord-based approach! The student will learn various chord shapes and strumming patterns to play along with their favorite songs! I do not teach classical-style finger-picking guitar.
